Charity meals - Nấu cơm từ thiện

 SMALL MEAL BIG HELP

Everyday at 10.30 am, rain or shine, a motorbike from Linh Son Pagoda, loaded with a big container, speeds to Hanoi based K Cancer Hospital, carrying 100 lunch boxes.

The Buddhists from the pagoda in Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi, have been providing meals for destitute cancer patients at the hospital since late last year (starting from year 2006).
Before the motorbike from the pagoda arrives, a group of women who are patients themselves or relatives of the sick usually gather near the hospital's Pharmaceutics Department with a little happiness flashing in their weary eyes. Although each meal is not worth much (about VND 5,000), it is a contribution that helps ease suffering a little and shows a little moral support.

Nguyen thi Xau from Kim Son district, Ninh Binh province whose husband Bui Van On is a patient at the hospital with throat cancer, is just one person who is glad for the food service from the pagoda. "Today I will give my husband a little bit of meat, egg and some boiled kohlrabi and I will have rice with water, and that cannot be better," says Xau. "Otherwise, I will have to eat outside the hospital where it will cost more than VND 10,000 per ration which may not  be as nutritious and clean as this." "We have been in the hospital for three months, had to borrow VND 30 millions from the bank to pay for the treatment". A charitable meal like this really helps us save a considerable amount of money".
During the last four days, Luong thi Hon, 37, a Thai ethnic minority woman, has been receiving the pagoda's meals and making them go a long way.
"In the evening, after eating some of the meals in the morning, I only have to spend VND 10,000 on rice to eat the remaining food", she says.
"Today is a special day, I will finish the whole meal to prepare for my breast operation tomorrow morning because my doctor told me not to have dinner. I appreciate what the pagoda is doing. When I first arrived here from Moc Chau, Son La province, I did not believe I could be blessed like this. My doctor said after they remove my tumour, I will go back to my three children and my regular work".
Thich Nu Nhu Hien, a female bonze at Linh Son pagoda, had the idea for the food service last year. "Becoming a monk means thinking and doing good", says Hien. "Saving people from misfortune is the goal of monks. Cancer is still an incurable disease and many cancer patients here are poor. Their lives are hard but it is a little less hard".
The hospital is also helping its poor patients with a new policy to reduce disadvantaged people's hospital bill by as much as 70%, with hospital management fully endorsing the pagoda's service.

"The hospital really welcomes the philanthropic deeds of Linh Son pagoda, because often tumour patients receive long term treatments which are such a burden for them", says Deputy Director of the hospital, Dang The Can. "The meals will help a little to ease their mind".
